CONCEPT-

Lord Bankey Bihari temple is a Hindu temple built in 1862, dedicated to Lord Krishna (the tenth incarnation of Lord Vishnu), who arrived on earth in Dwaparyug, often referred to as the loving ‘lover god’, lover of his Brij Dham consorts; Gopies, Gwalas, and cows. He is the supreme enjoyer and confers ‘Rasa’ in the life of his devotees, so often referred to as “Raseshwara”.

Lord Bankey Bihari got his name from one who stands handsomely in a “Tribhanga posture”- bent in three places with his hand folding to hold his favorite flute, waist, and legs folded into a three bent posture.

Lord Bankey Bihari fondly referred to as “Shri Bankey Bihari ji” is worshipped for his amazing devotees from all over and mitigates their troubles, trials, and tribulations. His divine grace instills in them peace, faith, devotion, and content. Devotees offer their Sewa to him with the highest level of love and servitude.

The temple of Banke Bihari ji is situated in the holy city of Vrindavan in the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh State.

Location of Temple: -   Bankey Bihari temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Krishna, is situated in the holy city of Vrindavan in the Mathura district Uttar Pradesh. It is situated near RADHAVALLABH Temple. This temple is among the 7 temples of Thakur of Vrindavan including Radhavallabh, Govind Dev and four other important temples. Lord Bankey Bihari was originally worshiped at “Nidhivana” in Vrindavan city. Haridas Swami originally worshipped this devotional image under the name of Kunj-Bihari ("Enjoyer of Green pastures and Lakes").

IDOL HISTORY: - Bankey Bihari Temple was established by Swami Haridas who was considered as the reincarnation of the Sakhi Lalita (a female friend of the inner consortium of Lord Krishna in Dvapara Yuga). Haridas Ji was the guru of the famous singer Tansen-(The court musician of Mughal emperor Akbar). It is said that Lord Radha and Krishna appeared as Lord Bankey Bihari in Nidhivan area of Vrindavan on the deep request of Haridas swami after he devotedly sang the following verse-

(" Mai ri sahaj jori pragat bhai ju rang ki gaur syam ghan damini jaisen. Pratham hun ahuti ab hun aagen hun rahihai na tarihai taisain.. Ang ang ki ujraii sugharaii chaturaii sunderta aisain.. Shri Haridas ke swami syama kunjbihari sam vais vaisain." )

On hearing this verse the Celestial couple Shyama Shyam (Radha Krishna) appeared in front of him and his devotees. Swami Haridas requested the Lord to take him away from the duality of worshipping the two powers of Radha and Krishna. Immediately (according to the folklore and legends handed down to us by many generations of Goswami’s ) the divine couple merged into one form, and the idol of Banke Bihari appeared in Nidhivan. (The beauty of the divine couple was so much that lesser mortals, like you and me, won’t be able to bear such a heavenly beauty. Sensing this Swami Haridasji requested both of them to take a single form, as the world won’t be able to bear their image. He requested them to take a single form like Ghan (cloud) and Damini (lightning), thus giving a perfect metaphor to the combined beauty of Dark Lord and his fair consort, Radha ji. Also, he wanted his beloved lord to be in front of his eyes always. Granting him his both wishes, the couple turned itself into one single black charming idol, the same one that you see in the temple today. The charm and beauty of Shri Bankey Bihariji is the only reason why the ‘darshan’ in the temple is never continuous but is broken by the curtain is drawn on him regularly. It is also said that if one stares long enough into the eyes of Lord Bankey Bihari ji, the person would lose his self-consciousness).

This idol was established in Nidhivan initially but later shifted to the main temple. A new temple befitting the glory of Bihariji was constructed in 1862 AD. Goswamis themselves mobilized resources for the construction. The temple is an architectural beauty in itself and follows the contemporary Rajasthani style.

The image of Bihariji installed in the Shri Bankey Bihari Mandir is the one granted to Swami Haridas by the celestial couple Shyama-Shyam themselves. Submitting to the desire of devotees The Lord appeared in person with his divine consort and left back a black charming image before disappearing.

LORD BANKEY BIHARI SEWA: - The sewa of the Bihari ji is performed in three parts every day i.e. Shringar, Rajbhog, and Shayan.

a-  Shringar- ( bath, dressing, and adornment with jewelry like crown and necklaces)

b-  Rajbhog - (feast food offering) in the forenoon.

c- Shayan Sewa - (Shayan means sleep) is offered in the evening.

The temple does not have a tradition of Mangala (early morning) sewa. As it is believed that the childlike Lord Bankey Bihari ji has to be allowed to take complete rest and should not be disturbed out of deep slumber so early in the morning. Mangala Aarti is done only on the day of Janmashtami( Birthday of Lord Krishna).

Common Names of God:- Lord Bankey Bihari ji is lovingly addressed as “Thakur ji”, He is known by thousand different names that can be read from Krishna/ Gopala/Vishnu Sahastranama stotra.
