CONCEPT-

TEMPLE HISTORY

  • Srinathji is our beloved Lord Krishna, in his 7th year of manifestation, symbolizing the event of Krishna lifting the Govardhan Hill. Initially found on Govardhan hill of Mathura district, the main statue is now placed in the Rajasthan state of Mewar in small temples of the town of Nathdwara, situated 48km away from Udaipur in North East direction.

Discovery of Idol

  • It is said that Lord Shrinathji appeared first on the hill of Govardhan in Mathura district. His idol was discovered in the village named ‘Aanyor’ when ‘Dhumar’ cow belonging to ‘Sadyu Pandey’ was first observed by Mahendranath Puri who saw the cow serving the lord daily by its milk. The Lord Shrinathji was placed in a temple in ‘Jatipura’ village of Mathura district and worshipped first by Mahendranath Puri.
  • Lord Shrinathji appeared to Saint Vallabhacharya of “Shuddhadvaita” marga In Hindu Vikram Samvat year 1549 and directed him to shift the Shrine back to Govardhan hill and start his worship and Sewa according to the Vallabh sampradaya marga. Vithalnath, his son institutionalized the worship of Shrinathji by adopting Shrinathji as the central presiding deity of Vaishnav sect called “Pushtimarga”. Shrinathji was fondly anointed by various names like- ‘Govardhannathji’, ‘Gopalji’, ‘Thakurji’ etc by Saint Vallabhacharya. , Shrinathji is referred to with the honorific Thakurji in the local area and customarily the name Shrinathji is not uttered as a matter of respect and reverence. The religious tradition holds that Shrinathji would return to Govardhan someday.

Shifting of Idol from Govardhan Hill to Nathdwara (Rajasthan)

  • To save it from Mugal iconoclastic policies and onslaught of Hindu temples by Emperor Aurangzeb, this shrine was transported through river Yamuna and shifted from Mathura (Govardhan Hill) via Agra to a ‘Haveli’ is a village ‘Sihad’ in Nathdwara area in mid 17th century.
  • It is said that during transportation of idol to a safe location from Mathura to Rajasthan, the cart carrying the idol got stuck up in mud in a small village named ‘Sihad’ near Laalbhag. Every attempt to move it failed. Thus, accepting it as Gods wish, a ‘Haveli’ like shrine was built around the idol under the rule and protection of Maharana Raj Singh of Mewar (Rajasthan).

Temple Architecture

  • Shrinathji self-manifested himself and chose the spot of temple construction in a place in the village named ‘Sihad’ near Lalbagh area now known as ‘Nathdwara’. Here the shrine was built in a ‘Haveli’- the fortified mansion - once a royal palace of the Sisodia Rajput rulers of Mewar.
  • This haveli like structure encompasses various structures like a normal household like:-
a- Chariot – Original chariot in which Shrinathji brought.

b- Doodhghar- a room for milk
c- (Paanghar), - room for betel.
d- (Mishrighar and Pedaghar)- room for sugar and sweetmeats
e- (Phoolghar)- room for flowers
f- (Rasoighar) a kitchen
g- (Gahnaghar)- jewellery chamber
h- (Kharcha bhandaar)- treasury
i- (Ashvashala) - stable for horses of the chariot
j- (Baithak) - drawing room
k- wheel (Chakki) gold and silver grinding. There are several prominent temples around the world that play homage to Shrinathji like this.

About Shrinathji icon

  • Deity symbolizes 7 yr old form Lord Krishna lifting the Govardhan hill with his left hand raised up and right hand resting on the waist with the closed fist. A large diamond – ‘Chibuk’ is placed on the chin.
  • The icon is carved out of a monolithic black marble stone. It is flanked with images of three sages, two (cows, peacocks, elephants), one (lion, snake, parrot).
  • Shrinathji is embellished with precious jewels embedded in expensive delicately carved jewellary. Idol wears rich costumes made out of expensive silk cloths and woven ‘Shaneels’ embroiled with original ‘Zari’ work of Mughal and pre Mughal period.

It is said that Lord chooses his devotees himself and blesses the devotees according to his past Karmas define as ‘Prarabdh’- the set activities are done by us in our present and past lives. The holy book of Hindus – ‘Gita’ mentions the qualities of true ‘Bhakta’. Unflinching unselfish love, devotion, complete surrender of the devotee towards Shrinathji frees his surroundings from all kinds of evil, sorrows, and negativity bringing peace, love, success, happiness and all round prosperity.

Lord Krishna is the ultimate giver bestowing amazing grace, poise, productivity and strength of character, purpose, and karma refining the entire soul, heart, mind and body of his devotee.

RITUALS:- According to the legends mother ’Yashoda’  was deeply concerned by the ever-playful Gopi-Krishna unscheduled past times which hardly left any time for baby Krishna to eat and rest. She had chalked out the days schedule making it mandatory for leaving the house only after having a proper snack or a meal followed by rest.

When Saint Mahaprabhu Vallabhacharya took over Lord’s service he followed the same schedule as decided by the ever protective mother ‘Yashoda’. He decided to open lord Shrinath’s haveli at specific eight times of the day when people could catch the glimpse (jhankhi) of the lord in the inner sanctum. The intermittent rest time was strictly meant for Lord’s past times with his favorite Brij Gopis.

Ritual
The eight darshans sequence is as below.

1. Mangala: The ‘first’ and most auspicious darshan of the day after lord’s breakfast in dawn time when beloved Shrinathji greets his devotees.

2. Shringar: The ‘second’ darshan after mother ‘Yashoda’ lovingly bathes and dresses baby Krishna (before the lord goes out to play with his friends). Mother lovingly looks at the beautifully dressed child and allows everyone to adore her child. Lord Shrinath is beautifully dressed in heavily embellished expensive costumes and jewellary.

3. Gval: After having a mid-morning snack, the lord is ready to be with his cows. Lord is worshipped by offerings of sacred Tulsi(Basil) leaves along with the recitation of his Sahastranama(His thousand names) with an offering of tulsi leaves with every name.

4. Rajbhog: Rajbhog darshan follows his mid-day meal with the offering of delicious sweets. Lord comfortably rests in ‘Nandalaya’ of the haveli. Fresh flowers, garlands, and lotus is offered in Aarti. Lord plays ancient board chess-like game called ‘chopat’ in the afternoon.

5. Utthanpan: This darshan follows just after lord has woken up from his afternoon nap.

6. Bhog: Bhog darshan follows just after, afternoon snack schedule of lord when he is getting ready to go out to play again.

7. Sandhya: Devotees get sandhya darshan after lord’s returns from Gau palan schedule in the evening. Gopis come for darshan of their beloved Krishna. Mother Yashoda wards off all evils are fallen on baby Krishna by (Nazar Utarna) ritual. Lords get ready to take bath for his evening meal.

8. Shayan: Last public darshan of the day after lord’s dinner, before Shrinathji goes off to sleep in his bedchamber.
